Getting Started with the NHS Bursary
As a proactive step, we recommend that you review the following resources before applying for your bursary:

- NHSBSA Website – you will need to create an account here to submit your bursary application.

Please keep a record of all medical expenses associated with you placement abroad such as Vaccinations, additional medical insurance.
Your transportation expenses during your placement are also reimbursable. Please keep a record and receipts.
Caribbean Electives Abroad will provide you with a detailed invoice and receipt of payment to include with the section of the form.
FAQ
NHS Bursary rules and eligibility criteria are reviewed regularly and may change from year to year. Always refer to the latest official guidance on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) website before submitting your claim, as the most up-to-date information will always be found there.
Q1: Can I claim for overseas placements? Yes. You may be able to claim certain costs incurred during your practice placement overseas, including:
- Travel between your term-time address and the airport or ferry terminal
- Travel between the airport or ferry terminal and your placement accommodation site
- Travel between your accommodation and the placement address
- Accommodation costs (at normal commercial or non-commercial rates)
- Essential costs such as medical insurance, vaccinations, tests, and visa fees.
All expenses must be supported by receipts and declared under “total allowable costs” in the claim form.
Q2: Can I claim for flights to my overseas placement? No. The cost of flights or other travel to reach your overseas placement is not claimable. Only excess travel costs — those higher than your normal daily travel to and from university — may be reimbursed.
Q3: Are there exceptions for certain locations? Yes. Overseas placements exclude the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and Isle of Wight. For these locations, flights or ferries (including car transport) can be claimed if costs are reasonable.
Q4: What documentation do I need? Keep receipts for all eligible expenses. Caribbean Electives Abroad will provide invoices and receipts to include with your claim.
